About the Location
Nestled in the Jaltemba Bay area community of Rincon de Guayabitos (between Los Ayala and La Peñita), Casa Abierta is located within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants, a cinema and, of course, the beach! Hiking trails are also nearby. We are located just over an hour’s drive from the Puerto Vallarta airport, in the south end of Guayabitos, next to the little free library.

Guayabitos is a Mexican vacation town in the province/state of Nayarit, with many local families flocking here to the beach each weekend. A number of expats (mostly Canadian and American) have also made this their winter or year-round home, and it’s easy to see why. Both neighbouring communities of Los Ayala and La Peñita are within walking distance (about 25 mins each, depending where you want to go), and each offers a unique local flavour.
For those who want to explore beyond walking distance but prefer not to use a car, you can borrow our bikes for a suggested donation of $10 CAD or $150 MXN, includes a shared lock and access to some tools; bring your own helmet if you want one. All proceeds from bike sharing go into bike maintenance and hopefully buying more bikes in the future. (We currently have two.)
Here in Guayabitos, you can hike the local mountains, snorkel at nearby Isla del Coral (the "penita", or little boulder, you see from the beach), or take in a movie at the local cinema. A number of small towns in the area offer Jazz and other live music. The beach is also a popular and nearby destination, where you can find a quiet corner to watch the pelicans dive for fish, or join the masses and enjoy live music, fresh seafood and a swim in the ocean!
After an exciting day out exploring, return to the quiet oasis of Casa Abierta, where you can relax under a palm tree in the garden, or in a hammock on the terrace at the house and enjoy the view of the mountains! In-home chef can be arranged, and many local restaurants deliver.
About Your Hosts
Vera is an Ontario and PEI-certified teacher, licensed pilot, and mother of monozygotic twins. Her wife, Tats, is a commercial pilot and bike instructor. Casa Abierta is their pandemic panic purchase: After getting stuck in nearby La Peñita when the Canadian government canceled flights between Canada and Mexico during the Covid pandemic in winter/spring 2021, they decided there could be worse places to be "stranded". Encouraged by Tats, Vera resigned from her full time position at the Ministry of Education, and flew back to Mexico to buy the house that would become Casa Abierta. "Abierta" means open, as in open to adventure, open to welcoming many guests from all walks of life.
Tats and Vera are sometimes joined by their teenage sons, Alex and Simon, as well as the Grumpy Professor, an elderly gentleman they look after, and Sneakers, the family dog. When not in Mexico, they divide their time between Toronto and PEI, Canada.
